May 17th is a special day for book lovers because, on this day, your hobby is celebrated by all Indonesian people. National Book Day was first created by Abdul Malik Fadjar, who was the Minister of National Education in the Gotong Royong Cabinet during President Megawati Soekarnoputri's era. The aim was to foster interest in reading and literacy in Indonesian society, which at that time was still very low.

Malik Fadjar's concerns eventually prompted him to create a National Book Day to attract people's interest in reading. As seen from the survey results of various international institutions, interest in reading in Indonesia still needs to be improved. This deficiency must be corrected immediately to avoid being left behind by other countries.

The government itself continues to try to overcome these problems through a number of policies. One of them is creating a National Book Day. Through this celebration, it is hoped that a stronger literacy culture can be created, having a positive impact on society's intellectual, educational, and social development.

We all know that books are important for obtaining information and increasing knowledge. As a "window to the world," books provide broad insights and increase human activity.

In addition, with books, people can have a hobby, namely reading. Reading is one of the hobbies in great demand by people from various circles, and reading can be done anywhere and anytime. Reading books can change feelings to calm and relax; it can also make someone develop their talent by becoming a writer.

However, currently, the habit of reading books is challenged by the use of social media. Some people prefer social media rather than books and spend much time on it.

Thus, on this national book day, people are invited to read more books to become broad-minded. Literacy must be improved so that education can be more advanced.
